garvin, we want to take a look at the weather with steve villanueva up in the storm center. good morning, steve. >> good morning, keethd and everyone, we're starting off with clear skies this morning, it looks like a great day. yesterday was insane. we had lots of active weather move across the area. we had a tornado that was confirmed, that touched down in frederick county. 71 degrees in the district. temperatures in the upper 60s. dew points are quite high. so it's going to be a warm and muggy day today. but at least we're going to see lots of sunshine. all is quiet o radar. yesterday's storm system is well offshore. and for today, you can see upstream, things are pretty quiet. but there's another storm system heading our way for tomorrow. for today, temperatures in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. mostly sunny, tomorrow, about 30% of a shower or storm like. likewise on monday. >> hopefully for not insane today. thanks, steve.

the worst damage from s yesterday's wild weather appears to be northwest of washington in the town of iamsville, maryland. residents say they saw and heard the storm coming. and this morning they're getting a better lk at the damage left behind. craig melvin has the latest. >> i heard the trees cracking. they were cracking everywhere. >> the afternoon storm surprised everybody here. >> we ran in the house, trees going by. we ran in the shop here. >> reporter: his 14-year-old daurlt, mary, huddled inside with her worried friend. >> my friend was crying. she called her mom, she thought her dog died. >> reporter: the dog was fine. and so were the people, but the wind picked u huge bales of hay and crashed them into fences across the street. the same winds toppled trees on to trucks and turned kathy's once-picturesque back yard into a war zone.

>> all the trees were snapped in half. >> the ground here, a lot of trees taken out, knocked over. broken at the tops, some were uprooted. knocking down power lines. >> reporter: from the air, more devastation at whiskey river golf course. snapped trees and trunks dotted the fairways and greens. continued cleanup here. but some started thursday evening before the sun went away. the lucky ones only had to repair part of a roof or clear a few leaves. but one family lost much more. this was perhaps the storm's greatest casualty. a farmhouse built around 1840 flattened in seconds. the historic home that sat a few feet away and built around the same time, also damaged. while a bird or two may have to find somewhere else to sleep, no one else will. as the fire chief explained, the trees seemed to swirl around people's homes, but refused to destroy them. >> it could have been a lot

worse. we're thanking the lord that this is all it is. >> reporter: craig melvin, news4. >> the same storms callsed damage in saintsberg in carroll county. strong winds damaged 15 houses, tearing the roofs off some of them. in another town, huge trees toppled on cars, incredibly, no one in the cars was hurt. and this was the view from our tower cam yesterday afternoon, of thousands of customers.r to new today in the district, police investigating a string of overnight shootings in the northwest. the most serious in the 4200 block of illinois avenue around 2:00 a.m. police say a man was found shot to death in a row house in that block. fourth district police are investigating two oer overnight shootings. three people were injured in those incidents. things are finally getting back to normal on metro, almost six weeks after the deadly collision on the red line. the national transportation safety board said it will

continue the investigation off-site from now on. that's going 20ean some letieaabce changes for metro riders. jackie benson explains. >> reporter: the ntsb's move clears the way for work to begin on the section of track between the fort totten and tacoma station where june's deadly crash happened. nine people died when two red line trains collided. metro general manager john cato said the repair work will take 30 days. >> once we complete the repairs, we will be able to operate the service at normal speed. and keeping normal schedule. >> reporter: currently, metro trains are required to run at a greatly-reduced speed, about 15 miles per hour through the affected area. riders have been patient, well aware of the reason for the delay. >> very slow sometimes. not very reliable getting downtown. >> reporter: metro's gm said ntsb investigators have removed train control modules from the

affected area for examination. >> i have nonformation of the results of those tests. when that is decided, and if any problems are found or any areas that they wish for us to do additional work, they will communicate that to us. and to the public at the same time. >> rorter: metro says it will keep riders updated on the red line repair work through website.ab website. last several months, is showing signs of stabilizing. this means that eventually, businesses will start growing and will start hiring again. >> however, the worst is not over yet. the monthly jobs report is out next week. the president said it will likely show that we're still continuing to lose far too many jobs. higher taxes are coming to the district. the d.c. council has approved a series of tax hikes and spending cuts, to close a $666 million budget deficit projected over the next three years. the move helps the council avoid dipping into the city's rainy day fund. the sales tax goes up 6%. the gas tax rideses 3.r5% and the cigarette tax increases to $2.50 a pack. the redskins get suited up today and the nationals say good-bye to nick johnson. here's lindsay czarniak with more.

yesterday the house pushed for more funds, because ever concerns the program would run out of money. >> reporter: at auto dealerships across the country -- >> our phones have been ringing off the hooks. not only that, we are just selling eight or ten a day from each store sometimes. >> reporter: new cars flying off the lots, gas-guzzlers being left in the dust. >> saturday, sunday, and part of tuesday, we were just going crazy. >> reporter: uncle sam's offer of trade-in rebates of up to $4500, has given the auto industry a sudden boost. we estimate that about 220-some thousand vehicles have been sold. >> not that many weeks ago there were skeptics who e the program would work. >> reporter: but the overnight success of the program has become a big headache for washington. it's blown through it's budget and now washington is scrambling

to keep it funded. before going on the august break, the house voted to pump in another $2 billion in unused stimulus money. while several republicans supported the bill, others called it another expensive bailout for the auto industry. >> maybe we should have a cash for cluckers program and pay people to eat chicken. >> we decided to give out free money and now we're surprised when people take advantage of it and love the program. >> reporter: auto dealers and auto buyers can hope congress can keep the program on track. buyers have nothing to worry about, but the dealers might night be as fortunate, if cash fo clunkers were it stall. on capitol hill, brian hill, news4. honda is recalling almost a half million vehicles due to a potentially fatal air bag dects. it recalls some of the best-selling accord and civic models from 2001 and 20. honda said the air bag inflaters

can rupture causing metal fragments to shoot through the bags and strike people in the car. the defective air bag is on the driver's side and has been linked to one death. the car maker said the air bags will be replaced for free. air pollution could lower a child's iq even before birth, according to the results of a new study. five years ago, scientists began monitoring pregnant mothers in three sections of new york city. after birth, they kept track of how much pollution the children were exposed to. at age five, the kids took an intelligence test. researchers found the ones who had been exposed to the most pollution scored the lowest. they say it is likely due to exposure to lead, mostly from exhaust fumes from traffic. but they say more studdyes are necessary confirm the link. 71 degrees outside, up next, the morning's top sports stories and an update on the weather, steve will be here with a forecast to see if we'll have a

the space shuttle endeavor and its crew of seven are back on earth. the crew built a new addition to the lab at the international space station. and also deployed two paris of small satellites into orbit. the current shuttle program is winding down, only seven flights remain to finish building the space station. wow, i'm not going to be able to imagine nasa and space life without the shuttle. it's been around for a couple of

decades now. almost finished. >> and it seems like they're doing so much work. they have a launch every day. >> they'll get their money's worth. >> we've got our money's worth yesterday in the weather department. >> yesterday was quite a day. we had some really active weather that came through, lots of thunderstorms and even a tornado that was confirmed in northern frederick county. so we did have some active weather. today, much different. yesterday's nasty weather is now well offshore. and in fact for today high pressure willed build in and we'l of su of sunshine. it will be a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine. warm and humid as well. there is another front off to the west. and that one will be pushing towards the area as we head into tomorrow and monday. here's what it looks like outside, it is clear. we're starting off mostly clear this morning with a couple of clouds drifting through. for the most part we will see plenty of sunshine today as we look across the potomac this morning. so temperaturewise, here's what's happening. it is currently 71 degrees, a warm start to the day.

we have ath 3 3 miles per hour. for the month of july, we had seven 90-degree days, seven. we had much more last year. so temperaturewise, 71 in the beltway. 69 springfield, 68 out at dulles international. dew points are still on the high side. they're in the upper 60s. in fact, it will be qte humid through the weekend. then the dew points will start to drop on the back side of the next frontal band. all is quiet on digital ppler. that's the way it will stay until tomorrow. when we can start to see another round of showers and possibly some thunderstorms. but not severe weather. 69 up in new york. 63 buffalo. 61 cincinnati. it is a bit cooler off into the ohio valley and the upper midwest. here's the storm that came through yesterday. on the back side of that storm system. high pressure in control. this will bring us a really lovely day. but here comes the next system that will be approaching into sunday afternoon. yesterday's storm did produce a lot of damage. you can see all of the wind damage from the carolinas

rough the mid-atlantic. and all the way up towards, up towards the boston area. locally again, we did have the tornado that touched down in northe maryland. so here's the futurecast. there's the front that brought us the active weather yesterday, today, mostly sunny. really nice afternoon. plenty of sunshine out there. and again, temperatures right around 90 degrees. then tomorrow here comes the next frontal band. we'll still have enough moisture in place where we will see a few scattered showers and maybe a thunderstorm or two. otherwise, a mix of sun and clouds. and then for monday, another round of storms, especially east of town. welt of the beltway on monday. i think we'll stay dry, east of he beltway, swved hae ul ndst a storms. for today, we'll see a nice afternoon. here's your extended forecast. for today, we'll call it mostly sunny to partly cloudy. but for the most part it will be nice and sunny. so mostly sunny skies today. andt then tomorrow, partly sunn, a chance of a shower or thunderstorm. a little bit cooler. 86 degrees. on monday, again a chance of a shower or storm.

yesterday afternoon. the town of iamsville was hit hard with a lot of downed trees and several damaged homes. good morning, welcome back to "news4 today," the weekend edition, i'm keith garvin. we want to start this half hour with a quick lookt the weather with steve villanueva in storm center 4. >> it looks like it's going to be a great day, plenty of sunshine out there. and temperatures climbing up to about 90 degrees. yesterday's storminess is long gone. 71 now. currently 63 in manassas, 66 in clinton. dew points on the high side. and in fact with the southwesterly flow, it will be quite humid today. but all is quiet on digital doppler. there's the storm that came through yesterday, it's now offshore. and things are petty quiet. temperatures heading into the upper 80s, lower 90s.

quite warm and muggy, under mostly sunny skies. and then for tomorrow, another frontal band approaches we could see some showers, maybe a thunderstorm. likewise on monday. of course, all the details coming up in just a little bit. back to you. prince william county has turned into something of a haven for roaming bears. there have been about a dozen bear sightings in the haymarket and gainesvilleareas. the latest happedil at a day carentceer. >> we have a dumpster right here and yeah, there was a little bear. >> sunday evening in gainesville, it wasn't just the humans sitting down for dinner. a local family spotted a black bear foraging for food in a dumpster. no one else was around, but there was a problem, the dumpster was in the parking lot of a day care center. yvonne is the center's director, a center that watches 200 children. >> it's been six days and we

have soccer class, we usually do our class behind the fence in the wooded area. we didn't do that, we did it up here. just because, why take the chance with all of those kids. >> you think it was cool that there was a bear over here. >> yes, but it wasn't big. >> it wasn't a big bear? >> no. >> so you wouldn't have been afraid of the bear? >> why wouldn't you be a afraid of the bear? >> i'm not scared of bears, i'm only scared of spiders. >> there have been a dozen reported sightings of bears this summer. these photos came from a gainesville man who found a bear feeding on the bird feeder in his back yard last month. when bears venture out of the woods, into our communities, they're mainly looking for a reliable food source, to avoid any encounters, expts say remove the potential source. >> without the food, the bear has really no designs of staying, that's why it's here, it's got food and space, so it's going to stick around until those things are taken away. >> reporter: virginia's

department of game and inland fisheries said the black bear spotted sunday, like most black bears is more afraid of humans than we are of them. never feed the animals on purpose. >> bears do not -- they're not stupid. they associate humans with food. whenever they're able to get that food. so if the food is there to them, the danger, as these bears could become aclimted to it and lose their fears of humans. >> so in other words, grin and bear it from a distance. it's not unusual to see black bears this time of year. residents should not panic if they see one. virginia's black bear is population is growing, estimated to have grown by 37% in the last eight years. it was a scare at the courthouse in alexandria friday. someone spotted a copperhead snake outside a courtroom. a juvenile holding cell was nearby. the snake moved quickly. seen disappearing into a bler a omoind grong dowome som s utiliy

apparently told his friend he would wait for better weather. but according to the report, he took off shortly after. the helicopter crashed after hitting an unmarked utility wire over interstate 70. a new angle shows how extensive the damage was to the house of a former d.c. school board member wednesday night. water officials promise a full investigation into the fire. the d.c. water and sewer authority said today, it is working with the fire department to determine what went wrong. a man has died following a shooting in columbia heights. police say the shooting involved a special police officer. it happened just after 9:00 last night in the 1400 block of girard street. the armed security guard was on duty when he shot the man in the stomach. the homicide decision is now investigating. new developments in the chandra levy case, we're learning more about the suspect,

ingmar guandique. his a horysneave a different theory about who murdered the washington intern. pat collins has details. >> reporter: another twist in this high-profile murder case. in superior court, defense attorneys representing the man charged in the murder of chandra levy, say they know of ten other people who are possible suspects. those defense attorneys represent ingmar guandique, the man charged in the death of the washington intern. chandra levy, disappeared in may, 2001. her remains found in rock creek park a year later. ingmar guandique charged last march. at the time of his arrest, he was already in jail for attacking two female joggers in rock creek park. prosecutors working the case plan to present evidenceys of other crimes linked to ingmar guandique. a former cellmate, who claims he was raped by ingmar guandique.

it was a great month on wall street. the dow made a strong finish yesterday, closing at 9171. july's gains total 724 points, an 8.4% gain. this is, was the best july for the market in 20 years. the momentum of wealth could be a sign of good things to come. this week, we'll get some key reports on the economy. cnbc's bill griffith has details. >> reporter: wall street rolls into the dog days of summer with a big wind at its back. the stock markets just wrapped up one of their best julys in decades. and historically when july is hot, stocks get even hotter in august. although the gains may not be quite as big. there will be less focus this weeks on earnings and more on the economy. automakers roll out their sales figures for july, the so-called cash for clunkers program may have helped boost sales last week, but some dealers say they

august and so far, not a single tropical storm has formed. not a single one. september is the peak month. so we'll see what happens. in august. all right. so back closer to home. here's the futurecast. there's the front that came through yesterday. for tomorrow, again, mostly nn temperatures climbing up to about 90 degrees. here comes the front for tomorrow. we'll still have enough moisture and energy in place where we could have a few showers and maybe a thunderstorm. otherwise, partly cloudy for tomorrow, with temperatures a little bit cooler than today. with highs basically in the mid 80s. for monday, east of town is whe we could see a shower or a thunderstorm as the front drapes itself across the delmarva peninsula. otherwise for everybody else, partly cloudy skies. for today, mostly sunny, warm, humid, temperatures around 90 degrees. a bit warmer off to the southwest. southwest. a bit cooler towards the extended forecast goes like this. again, a great day today. tomorrow, about a 30% chance of a shower or storm.

against homelessness. pat lawson muse explains. >> reporter: at the castle stadium in northwest, the name of the game was soccer. the players? homeless men from around the country, who have come to washington to kick off the street soccer usa cup. >> 16 teams from across the country, including washington, d.c. to participate in a competition to, for a chance to win the family trophy. >> reporter: a nationwide effort that uses soccer to help eradicate poverty and homelessness. 116 players from 16 stipes will compete to raise funds and awareness. >> raising money for homelessness. a lot of big-city mayors have taken on the challenge. we've done it here in d.c. this is another way of raising awareness and raising dollars. >> reporter: mayor fenty helped kick off the first game between reigning champ minneapolis and e d.c. team.
